Moccas Hill Wood - Moccas Park National Nature Reserve

An ancient woodland that feels genuinely removed from the rest of Herefordshire, Moccas Hill Wood sits within the larger Moccas Park National Nature Reserve - a proper working landscape where history and nature collide. The wood itself is the real draw: gnarled old oaks and sweet chestnuts, some of them centuries old, create a canopy thick enough to feel like another world entirely. Walking through here, you're not just looking at trees - you're surrounded by deadwood that's been left deliberately to rot, which sounds odd until you realise that's where the beetles and fungi do their best work. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a quick half-hour dash.
