Dumgoyach Standing Stones

Three ancient stones stand in a field near Stirling, weathered by centuries and surprisingly easy to miss if you're not looking properly. Dumgoyach Standing Stones are Bronze Age markers - nobody's entirely sure what they were for, which is half the appeal. They're just there, matter-of-fact, doing their job quietly.

It's a straightforward walk to reach them, and the whole visit takes maybe thirty minutes unless you're the type who sits around pondering Bronze Age mysteries. The stones themselves aren't towering or dramatic - they're modest, really - but there's something about standing in front of something that old that works on you. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. Just stones and fields.

Walkers heading through the Scottish Lowlands will find this a decent detour if you're timing a route through Stirling. It pairs reasonably with a wider park break - the WHW Hotel & Campsite is less than a mile away, which makes it easy to pop over without much faffing. If you're based at one of the glamping spots further out - Loch Lomond Sunset or Arcadia, say - it's worth adding to your list when you're exploring the area.

History types and walkers get more out of this than casual visitors. Kids might be underwhelmed unless they're genuinely interested in ancient stones. There's no information board to speak of, so bring a guidebook or do your homework beforehand. Free to visit, obviously - there's nothing to charge for. Go at golden hour if you can; the light does something proper to the old stone.
