Garloch Hill

The walk up Garloch Hill takes you out of Stirling proper and into proper countryside within minutes. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like Ben Lomond further west - but the views back towards the town and across the Lowlands are genuinely worth the effort. The climb itself is straightforward enough, though the path can get boggy in winter, so pick your footing carefully.

You're looking at a solid hour and a half round trip from the base, depending on fitness and how long you dawdle at the top. Go early or late in the day if you want to avoid the crowds - midday brings the school parties and local runners working through their training. The summit offers decent sightlines across to the Ochil Hills, and on a clear day you'll pick out landmarks you recognise from Stirling town centre.

Walkers will find this accessible without being dull. It's not technical, but it's real walking rather than a gentle stroll. Families with older kids cope fine; the younger ones might find it a bit of a slog. History enthusiasts should know this sits within reasonable striking distance of some proper battles - Stirling Bridge, Bannockburn - so you could anchor it into a broader day exploring the area's medieval connections.

Staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - The WHW Hotel & Campsite is closest at just 2.4 miles - gives you a decent base for combining this with other Lowlands walks. It's the sort of hill that rewards visiting in different seasons. Worth doing once you're in the region, though you're unlikely to plan a trip around it alone.
