Duncan Road Park

Duncan Road Park sits on the edge of Aboyne, a proper gem if you're after something low-key rather than a major attraction. It's a nature reserve that feels more like a local secret than a tourist hotspot - woodland paths, open grassland, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Aberdeenshire in the first place.

You'll find yourself wandering through mixed woodland with decent stretches of open ground, good for spotting birds and just getting your head straight. There's nothing showy about it. No visitor centre, no café, no admission charge as far as I can tell. It's the sort of place where you turn up, walk for as long as you fancy, and leave feeling you've had proper time in nature without the crowds.

This works brilliantly if you're based at Tarland Camping & Caravanning Club Site just down the road - genuinely, you could pop over for an hour or three on a quiet afternoon. The same goes if you're staying at Firbank Park or Aboyne Loch Caravan Park. It's ideal for walkers who like their paths a bit wilder than manicured, and families won't find it tedious because there's enough space for the kids to burn off energy without anyone worrying about steep drops.

Best visited outside peak tourist season when you'll have it practically to yourself. Bring proper boots if there's been rain - it can get squelchy. Allow an hour minimum, but honestly you could spend a good couple of hours here without running out of paths to explore.
