East Knowle Wood

East Knowle Wood is a proper Sussex woodland sitting just outside Heathfield - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's dense forest, genuinely old-growth stuff with enough shade to keep things cool even on sweltering days. The paths wind through between the trees, and there's real woodland floor beneath your feet rather than tarmac or gravel.

You're looking at a solid woodland walk here, not a stroll. Bring boots if it's been wet. The appeal is straightforward: if you want to step away from the manicured park experience and spend an hour or so among proper trees, this does the job. Families with younger kids might find it a bit much - the paths aren't exactly paved, and there's not much in the way of facilities or things to "do", which some will find refreshing and others dull.

Historically minded types will appreciate the quietness of it. Walkers genuinely love this sort of landscape - the kind where you might spot deer if you're lucky and the light filters through the canopy properly.

If you're based at Horam Manor Country Park or Dernwood Farm Glamping just down the road (both under a mile away), East Knowle Wood is the obvious escape when you need actual forest rather than holiday park amenities. Fontmills Farm and Hale Farm are similarly close by. No entrance fee that we can find, and you can do it in an hour or spend the afternoon. Best visited autumn or spring when it's not been hammered by summer foot traffic.
