Ellershaw Wood

The woodland around Ellershaw feels properly peaceful - tall trees, decent walking trails, and the sort of quiet you don't get near Carnforth town centre. It's a working forest, so don't expect manicured paths or visitor centres. What you get instead is the real thing: moss-covered paths, natural clearings, and occasional glimpses of wildlife if you're lucky enough.

You'll want solid footwear here, especially after rain. The ground can be boggy in places, and tree roots snag your feet if you're not watching where you're going. Most people manage an hour to ninety minutes wandering through without rushing, though there's nothing stopping you from staying longer.

Walkers will find this worthwhile - it's the kind of place to clear your head rather than chase views or tick boxes. Families with older kids who can handle uneven ground will do fine; toddlers in buggies would struggle. The forest works well as an add-on if you're based at Hidden Hills Luxury Glamping, six miles away, though it's hardly the sort of destination worth a long drive on its own.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and no strict opening hours - it's just a forest you can access when you like. Midweek mornings are best if you want solitude. Come prepared for weather; Lancashire's reputation for rain isn't unearned.
