The ruins of Bury St Edmunds Abbey dominate the town centre like a medieval ghost story written in flint and stone. The gatehouse itself is genuinely impressive - a proper Norman structure that makes you understand why medieval monks had the best real estate. The grounds are well-maintained, with information boards dotted about explaining what stood where. Families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract - there's not much to physically do beyond walking - but if your children are into history or medieval fortifications, they'll get something from it.

It's free to explore the exterior and wander the grounds, though the gatehouse exhibition space may charge (worth checking before you visit). Best visited in spring or early autumn when the grounds aren't baking hot or waterlogged. The abbey sits right in town, so you can combine it with a wander around Bury St Edmunds itself, which has decent shops and cafes.

If you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Bright Meadow is closest at just over four miles out - this makes a solid rainy-day activity or a cultural half-day between longer walks. The ruins deserve respect but don't demand your entire afternoon.
