St Edmundsbury Cathedral

The cathedral sits right in the heart of Bury Saint Edmunds, impossible to miss with its soaring tower dominating the town centre. It's been a place of worship for centuries, though what you see today is largely Victorian - a proper restoration job that's actually rather well done. Inside, the space opens up beautifully. High ceilings, decent stained glass, and the sort of quiet that makes you drop your voice without thinking about it. The building itself tells the story of Suffolk's importance as a religious centre, and if you're into ecclesiastical architecture, there's plenty to unpick here.

Walking around the cathedral doesn't take long - maybe thirty minutes if you're not reading every plaque - which makes it a decent pitstop rather than a full day's activity. Free to enter, which is always a bonus. It works well as part of a wider wander around Bury Saint Edmunds itself; the town has enough cafes and shops to justify staying an hour or two. Families with younger kids might find it a bit dull unless they're genuinely interested in churches, but it's worth a look if you're passing through anyway.

If you're staying at one of the local parks - The Four Bells Glamping or West Stow Pods are both close by - the cathedral's a natural addition to a day exploring the town. Bury itself has decent bones, and the cathedral anchor makes for a proper focal point. Don't expect fireworks, but as a cultural marker on a Suffolk holiday, it does the job.
