Etal Castle

The ruins of Etal Castle sit on a slight rise above the River Till, about five miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, and they're honestly more interesting than you'd expect for what amounts to a pile of weathered stone. What's left is mainly the keep - a substantial four-storey tower from the 14th century that still commands the landscape with a certain grim authority. You can wander round the grounds freely, poke about the ruins, and get a proper sense of what medieval border life must have been like perched here on the edge of England and Scotland.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're already in the area exploring the Borders - and if you're staying at Coldstream Holiday Park just down the road, you've got an easy afternoon visit on your hands. History buffs will spend time reading the stone, imagining raids and garrison life. Kids tend to get restless after forty minutes unless they're the type who like clamping about old buildings and making up stories. The nearby village is utterly quiet, which is either a selling point or a drawback depending on what you're after.

Access appears to be open and free, though there's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation - bring a decent guidebook or do your homework beforehand. Late afternoon light here is particularly good for photographs. It's best visited as part of a wider Borders trip rather than as a destination in itself, but if you're passing through toward the Scottish interior, it's absolutely worth the ten-minute detour.
