Etal Station - Heatherslaw Light Railway

The narrow-gauge trains at Heatherslaw Light Railway feel genuinely quaint without being twee - this is a proper working railway, not a theme park pretending to be one. Based near Etal Station in the Scottish Borders, just south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, the line runs through countryside that's genuinely worth the journey.

The locomotives are real Victorian and Edwardian engines, lovingly restored by volunteers who clearly know their stuff. You can ride a short stretch of track through farmland and woodland, and there's something oddly satisfying about the clank and hiss of steam when it's running. The station buildings have that authentic railway feel - proper ticket offices, period furniture, the works.

It's brilliant for railway enthusiasts and families with kids who aren't too young (the rides are genuinely short, so patience matters). Adults without a train obsession might find 90 minutes enough. The setting itself is lovely though - proper rural Borders landscape - so it works as a pleasant afternoon if you're staying in the area.

Check opening hours before you go - seasonal operation is typical for these places. If you're based at Coldstream Holiday Park nearby, it's close enough for a half-day outing without being a massive commitment. Worth combining with a walk along the river or a visit to one of the local villages. The admission cost isn't steep for what you get, and parking is straightforward.
