Fort Victoria Country Park

Victorian fortifications meet modern family entertainment at this coastal site near Freshwater, where military history buffs and curious kids alike find plenty to explore. The original fort dates back to the 1860s, built to defend the Solent from French invasion - though these days the only thing under siege is your wallet at the gift shop.

Inside the thick stone walls you'll find several small museums covering local maritime history, wildlife and geology. The planetarium puts on regular shows that genuinely impress, while the marine aquarium houses local sea life including some properly massive spider crabs that fascinate children. Don't expect Natural History Museum scale - this is more intimate and manageable for younger visitors.

Outside, the grounds offer lovely coastal walks with proper views across to the mainland. The old gun emplacements still stand sentinel, and kids enjoy clambering over the fortifications. Allow a good half day if the weather's decent.

Families staying at nearby Tapnell Farm or any of the Colwell Bay parks will find this makes a cracking rainy day alternative to the beach. It's educational without being stuffy, and the location on the island's western tip means you can easily combine it with a trip to the Needles. Just check opening times before setting off - this being a smaller attraction, hours can be seasonal.
