Furzey Ground Wood

The woodland around Furzey Ground feels older than the surrounding Hampshire countryside - gnarled oaks and dense undergrowth that tells you this patch has been left relatively untouched for years. It's proper forest walking rather than a managed country estate, which means uneven paths, low branches to duck under, and the occasional squelch underfoot depending on rainfall.

You're looking at a solid two to three hours if you want to explore properly, longer if you're the type to stop and identify trees. The paths wind through the wood without obvious signposting, so bring a map or a phone with decent offline navigation. Families with younger kids might find it a bit rambling and muddy for their liking, but anyone who enjoys actual woodland walking - the kind where you have to think about where your feet are going - will get something genuine here.

It's free access, which is refreshing. The wood lies roughly between Hungerford and the wider New Forest area, making it a decent half-day addition to a longer Hampshire walking itinerary. If you're based at Hollington Park Glamping nearby, this would be a proper alternative to the more polished forest parks. Go in autumn when the light filters through differently, or avoid it after heavy rain unless you don't mind returning to your accommodation looking like you've crawled through a bog. Not Instagram-friendly, but real.
