Gelt Wood

The walk through Gelt Wood near Armathwaite is a proper slice of Cumbrian woodland - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Ancient trees crowd the footpaths, and the Gelt Beck runs through it all, creating one of those landscapes that feels genuinely remote despite being accessible.

What makes it worthwhile is the lack of fuss. No visitor centre, no car parks jammed with day-trippers, just decent woodland walking with some genuine character. The paths wind alongside the beck and up through the trees, offering a decent bit of exercise without being punishing. You'll see moss-covered rocks, proper old forest floor, and occasionally the burn cutting through deeper channels. It's the kind of place where families with older kids will actually enjoy the walk rather than tolerate it - there's enough to spot and explore to keep them engaged for a couple of hours.

If you're camping at either Englethwaite Hall or Eden Valley Glamping, Gelt Wood makes an excellent half-day addition to your itinerary. It's close enough not to feel like a separate outing, and the woodland walk complements a park-based holiday nicely. Autumn is probably the best time - the canopy colours are decent and the paths won't be waterlogged.

Allow two to three hours depending on how slowly you move. Free to explore, no permissions needed that I'm aware of. Don't expect facilities or dramatic views - come here for the walk itself.
