You walk down through the visitor centre (which is decent enough, though a bit polished) and emerge onto the strand where the formations rise up like a natural cathedral. The walk itself takes maybe an hour if you're not rushed, picking your way across the rocks and getting close to the water. Seriously uneven terrain though, so proper footwear is non-negotiable.

The Bushmills Railway runs alongside this stretch of coast - a narrow-gauge heritage line that trundles between the causeway and the distillery. It's a charming ride rather than a thrill, and honestly worth doing once, though it's slow going. The journey gives you views you can't get from the ground, which is something. History buffs and geology enthusiasts will spend hours here cross-referencing the columnar basalt formations. Kids get bored after 45 minutes unless you make it into a treasure hunt across the rocks - the novelty of jumping between stones wears thin. Walkers should allow a full afternoon and bring waterproofs; the wind off the sea is relentless, and spray reaches the upper paths.

Free to access the causeway itself, though the visitor centre charges admission. Go early if you can. Summer weekends are rammed with coach parties, which flattens the experience a bit.
