Giants Causeway Carpark

The car park itself won't make your heart race, but what it gets you to absolutely will. This is the launching point for the Giants Causeway, one of those rare geological formations that actually lives up to the hype. You'll park up near Bushmills and make the walk down to where roughly 40,000 basalt columns jut out of the ground like they've been arranged by an obsessive giant with a ruler.

It's about a twenty-minute descent to the main hexagonal columns, and the path is well-maintained but does get steep in places. Worth it entirely. The formations themselves are genuinely strange to stand among - you can touch them, walk on them, scramble about to your heart's content. Kids absolutely get it. There's no queuing nonsense or roped-off areas; you're just there with the rocks and the sea.

The whole experience takes two to three hours if you're thorough. Free to access the columns themselves, though there's a visitor centre up top with the usual cafe prices. Bushmills is a proper little town if you need supplies, and the Causeway Country Pods just down the road offer comfortable self-catering if you're making a longer stay of it.

Best visited early morning or late afternoon to dodge the tour groups. The light's better then anyway. Weather changes fast up here, so waterproofs are essential even when it looks fine.
