Gibbet Wood

Ancient woodland on the outskirts of Carlisle, Gibbet Wood is exactly what it sounds like - a forest with a dark history and quiet appeal. The trees here are old enough to have witnessed centuries pass, and there's something about walking beneath that canopy that makes you feel properly small. It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a managed attraction, so don't expect information boards or facilities. What you get instead is genuine forest - the real kind with uneven ground, fallen branches, and the occasional boggy patch that catches you out.

This is the place for walkers who like their nature unvarnished. You won't find manicured paths or visitor centres, which means it appeals to a certain sort of person: those after a quiet ramble rather than a day out. The woodland has that still, atmospheric quality that makes it worthwhile even on a grey Cumbrian afternoon. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you fancy venturing in.

Staying at High Gaitle or Low Moor Head puts you within easy striking distance - both are under six miles away. If you're based at either caravan park and after something low-key to fill a morning, this works. It's not a headline attraction, but it's the sort of place that sticks with you, especially if you're the type who'd rather hear birds than crowds. Worth the short drive from Carlisle if woodland appeals to you at all.
