Gilsland Linn Waterfall

Water crashes down a proper gorge just outside Haltwhistle, and that's Gilsland Linn - a waterfall that rewards you for a short walk through woodland that's genuinely lovely in spring. The River Irthing's done all the work here, carving out red sandstone walls over centuries, and on a decent day the whole thing feels remote despite being minutes from the town.

You park near the village and walk down through trees to reach the falls themselves. The gorge narrows as you go, which builds the drama a bit. It's free to access, which is rare enough to mention, and the walk takes maybe thirty to forty minutes there and back depending on how long you linger. Don't expect a thundering Alpine drop - it's more of a series of cascades than one single plunge - but the setting in that tight sandstone canyon makes it worth the trip.

Walkers will find this a decent half-hour detour from a longer trek along Hadrian's Wall, which runs nearby. Families with younger kids might struggle on the muddier sections after rain, but teenagers will probably think it's cool. Visit in winter when water levels are higher, though the paths get slippery. In summer it's quieter than you'd expect.

If you're camping at Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Herding Hill Farm - both within five miles - this is an easy morning outing before exploring the Wall itself. Hadrian's Wall Campsite sits closest at under six miles, making it an obvious evening walk from your pitch.
