Glassknapper's Cave

The cave sits tucked into the cliffs near Durness, and you'll need to do a bit of scrambling to reach it - nothing technical, just rocky enough to feel like you've earned the view. Inside, the space opens up properly, with light filtering through the entrance to illuminate the rough stone walls. It's called Glassknapper's Cave because medieval craftsmen apparently worked flint here, making tools and blades by the sound of it. The evidence is long gone, but standing in the semi-darkness imagining them at it does something to your head.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a stroll - you're clambering over boulders and uneven ground - but it's the kind of scramble that takes maybe twenty minutes there and back. The real draw is the location itself. You're on the far northwest tip of Scotland, and the coastal cliffs around here are genuinely dramatic. On a clear day the views back towards the sea are worth the trip alone.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no admission charge that we could find. Just a cave. It's free, it's always open, and it takes an hour out of your day if you're thorough. Sango Sands Oasis, barely a mile away, makes a decent base for exploring this bit of coast - though honestly, if you're camping around Durness, you're here for the landscape rather than a single attraction. This cave is just one piece of it.
