Glencoe Lochan Trail

The walk around Glencoe Lochan takes you through proper Highland scenery without needing fell-walking boots or a map. It's a gentle loop that sits right beside the A82, so you're not trudging for hours to earn the views - which is exactly why families and casual walkers love it.

What you get is a loch ringed by Scots pine and birch, reflections of the Glencoe mountains bouncing off the water on a still day. The path is well-trodden and mostly flat, hugging the shoreline for much of the circuit. On a good afternoon, light hits the water just right and you understand why people keep coming back. It takes about an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you dawdle and take photos.

Ballachulish is the nearest town, just down the road, which makes this an obvious stop if you're driving through the glens. The trail works perfectly as a break from the car rather than a serious expedition. Kids won't grumble about the distance, walkers won't feel short-changed, and you'll see actual Highland landscape without committing your whole day.

Stay at Invercoe, just 0.3 miles away, and you're genuinely spoiled for access - you could do this walk before breakfast if the mood took you. Red Squirrel Campsite is marginally further but rates higher if you're after creature comforts. Free to visit, open year-round. Go midweek in autumn when the light's best and the midges have packed up.
