Glenlaggan Wood

A sprawling woodland about five miles south of Castle Douglas that's proper worth the drive if you're after an actual walk rather than a tourist trap. Glenlaggan Wood is the sort of place where you'll see locals with their dogs rather than camera-wielding crowds - which tells you everything. The main draw is a well-maintained network of paths threading through mature trees, with decent views over the Galloway landscape if you head to the higher ground. It's free to access and there's reasonable parking at the entrance.

You're looking at anything from thirty minutes for a gentle stroll to a couple of hours if you fancy exploring the deeper trails. The terrain varies from easy woodland walks to slightly steeper sections, so it suits families with older kids and serious hikers equally well. Spring and autumn are cracking times to visit - fewer midges, proper colour, and you won't be melting on a summer afternoon.

It pairs well with Castle Douglas itself, which has decent shops and a decent tea spot or two.
