Go Ape Grizedale

Swinging through the canopy above Grizedale Forest is exactly the sort of thing that transforms a caravan holiday into an actual adventure. Go Ape here runs a proper obstacle course through the trees - rope bridges, Tarzan swings, zip lines, the lot - strung between platforms high enough to feel genuinely thrilling without being reckless.

It's brilliant for teenagers and confident kids around ten and up. Younger ones can do the junior courses, though honestly, if they're nervous about heights, this will be a no. Adults seem to have just as much fun, which is the whole point really.

You'll need a couple of hours minimum, maybe three if there's a queue, and it's not cheap - factor in around £30-40 per person depending on the course you pick. Go midweek in school term if you can; weekends and holidays get rammed. The forest itself is beautiful, so even if someone in your group isn't doing the course, they won't be bored waiting around.

It's roughly four miles from Hawkshead Hill, so perfectly doable from any of the caravan parks in the area - Park Cliffe and Hill of Oaks are closest. Pair it with a walk around Windermere or a visit to the lake itself, which is only minutes away. After all that adrenaline, a quiet afternoon by the water sorts you right out.
