Golden Knoll Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Dursley, Golden Knoll Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon and wonder why it's not rammed with people. The forest floor is carpeted thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days you're walking through a sort of green twilight. Trails wind through the trees without too much faffing about - nothing technical, just straightforward woodland paths that older kids and families can manage without drama.

It's genuinely one for the quieter visitor. You won't find facilities or formal signage, which is precisely the appeal. No ice cream van, no coach parties, just the sound of branches underfoot and whatever birds are about. Allow an hour or so for a decent explore, longer if you're the type to potter and identify things.

The real value here comes if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Pepper Pot or The Riverside both sit within easy striking distance. Golden Knoll slots nicely into a Gloucestershire woodland tour without eating up your whole day. The walk itself is manageable year-round, though autumn is when the place really earns its keep. Winter's fine too, actually - the thinned canopy lets more light through.

So is it worth the detour? Only if you're after something genuine and low-key. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a week exploring the Cotswolds edge, it works. Free to access, takes minimal planning, and your kids probably won't complain.
