Gough's Coppice

Walk into Gough's Coppice and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is. This woodland sits just outside Church Stretton, a proper tucked-away corner of Shropshire that most people drive straight past. The coppice itself is a mixed woodland - oak, ash, and hazel mostly - with paths that wind through dappled shade and the occasional clearing where light floods through.

It's the kind of place where you can spend two hours or thirty minutes depending on your mood. Walkers will appreciate the network of tracks; they're not strenuous but they're genuine, not the sanitised sort you find at visitor centres. There's proper woodland atmosphere here - fallen trees, moss-covered stones, the smell of damp earth. Kids won't find play equipment or attractions, which means they either love it or get restless after the first twenty minutes. That said, if yours are the sort who'll turn over logs looking for beetles, they'll be entertained for ages.

The coppice is free and accessible year-round, though autumn is particularly worth the trip. Spring brings bluebells, which is worth timing a visit around if you're in the area. Allowing an hour minimum is realistic if you're doing more than a quick perimeter walk.

Stay at Alderwood Glamping just down the road and you've got the perfect base - close enough for a proper woodland ramble without it dominating your day. Greenway Touring and Glamping Park is a bit further but still within easy striking distance. Both make decent bases for exploring the wider Church Stretton area.
