Grafton Wood Nature Reserve

Ancient woodland spreads across 75 acres near Pershore, and Grafton Wood feels properly remote despite being accessible from the town. You're walking through one of Worcestershire's oldest surviving woods here - the sort of place where gnarled oaks have stood for centuries and the canopy closes in so completely that you lose track of the outside world.

It's a walker's paradise, frankly. The paths wind through bluebells in spring (genuinely spectacular), and the mix of mature trees means there's always something to spot - nuthatches, woodpeckers, the occasional tawny owl if you're quiet enough. Bring binoculars; the birdwatching is legitimately good. The reserve is free to access and you can easily spend two to three hours here without rushing, though an hour's walk is enough if you're on a tight schedule.

Families will enjoy it, though young children might tire quickly on uneven ground. History types should come here specifically - this is genuine old-growth woodland, the sort that shaped the entire landscape centuries back. It's managed by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, so it's well looked after without being over-manicured.

Pair it with a stay at one of the glamping spots nearby - Plum Tree's bell tents or Bowbrook's safari tents are both excellent, and you're only thirty minutes from the wood. The Springs Holiday Park works too if you want something more traditional. Autumn's probably the best time to visit, when the light cuts through differently and the paths aren't waterlogged.
