Grebe Corner, Bewl Water

The walk down to Grebe Corner rewards you with probably the finest view across Bewl Water's eastern shore. It's a proper vantage point - the kind of spot where you genuinely understand why someone bothered to build a bench here. From Wadhurst, it's an easy reach, and the path itself is well-maintained without being tedious.

What you're looking at is one of England's largest man-made reservoirs, and from this angle the water stretches out in a way that makes you forget you're in the Weald. There's actual drama to it. On a clear day the reflections are excellent for photographs, and birdwatchers will understand why it's named as it is - grebes are regular visitors, along with mallards and the occasional heron if you're patient.

Allow yourself an hour for the walk and viewing without rushing. It's not strenuous, but it's worth doing at a dawdle. The bench gets used, so go early or late in the day if you want solitude. Free to access, naturally.

If you're based at Hopgarden Glamping or Glassenbury Camping nearby, this makes for a solid morning or afternoon walk that doesn't demand a full day's commitment. It slots well into a longer Bewl Water circuit, or you can make it a standalone trip from either campsite. Worth the detour from Wadhurst.
