Green Hill

The walk up Green Hill takes you out of Hexham and into proper Northumberland fell country, where the views across Kielder Forest sprawl out in every direction once you reach the top. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District - but that's rather the point. You get genuine solitude and space without the crowds that plague higher hills.

The summit itself offers a straightforward vantage point across the forest and moorland, with clear days rewarding you with sight lines that stretch well beyond the immediate landscape. The climb is steady rather than punishing, making it accessible for families with older kids and anyone who wants a decent walk without needing rock climbing experience.

Worth allowing two to three hours return, depending on fitness. There's no visitor infrastructure at the top - bring water - and you'll need to check conditions in winter when the fell can turn boggy. The beauty here is its understatedness. No gift shop, no tarmac paths, just a proper hill and the quietness that comes with being slightly off the beaten track.

It pairs well with staying at one of the nearby parks around Kielder - the Waterside and Lodges or the Campsite are close enough to make this a natural half-day outing. Combine it with exploring Kielder Water itself if you want a less strenuous alternative for another day. Walkers and outdoor types will get the most from it. Day-trippers after Instagram views might find it a bit too understated.
