White Hill

The walk up White Hill rewards you with one of Northumberland's most straightforward fell ascents - nothing too technical, just proper open moorland that strips away all the nonsense. It's about 863 metres of uncluttered views, the kind of place where you can actually think without distraction.

From the summit you get sweeping looks across the Pennines and down towards Hexham, all without having to scramble or rope anything up. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. The moorland is exposed though, so wind can be a proper challenge and weather turns quickly - come prepared rather than optimistic.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination for toddlers or those wanting a gentle stroll, but for anyone comfortable with a three-to-four hour round trip on open ground it's solid work. The terrain can be boggy in places depending on rainfall, so decent boots matter more than technical skill.

The location works well alongside the Kielder parks nearby - you're only about 2.4 miles from Kielder Waterside and Landal if you're based in that area. It's the sort of hike you'd do on a clear morning before heading back for a proper lunch. There's nothing fancy about White Hill, no cafe or facilities, which is exactly why it feels authentic rather than processed. If you want unadorned Northumberland fell walking without the crowds, this does the job.
