The Belling

The walk up to The Belling from near Hexham rewards you with views across Northumberland's moorland that justify the climb. It's a proper fell rather than a dramatic peak - the kind of place where you understand why people move to this part of the world and never leave.

Once you're up there, the landscape opens out. On a clear day you can trace the valleys and forests stretching towards the Pennines. The summit itself is modest - there's no dramatic stone cairn or shelter, just the knowledge that you've reached the highest point and earned yourself a good view. The walk takes most of an hour from the nearest access point, depending on your pace and which route you take up.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Families with young kids might find the ascent tedious unless they're already keen on hills. History enthusiasts won't find much except the landscape itself, though the moorland here has been walked for centuries.

The real advantage is proximity to the Kielder Waterside parks - Kielder Waterside and Lodges and Landal Kielder Waterside sit just 2.2 miles away, making this a natural addition to a wider Northumberland base. You could easily combine it with exploring the forest itself or one of the longer forest walks. Go in decent weather. The moorland can turn grim fast when the mist rolls in.
