Hannam's Hill

From the summit, the Wharfe Valley spreads out below like a green carpet, with Otley's rooftops just visible to the south. Hannam's Hill might not trouble the serious fell walkers, but this modest Yorkshire peak delivers proper views without the slog of the bigger hills. The climb from Otley takes about 45 minutes if you're reasonably fit, following well-worn paths through farmland and over stone walls. Kids will manage it fine, though they'll probably grumble about the steady uphill slog for the first half. Once you're up there, the 360-degree panorama takes in Ilkley Moor to the east and the Yorkshire Dales rolling away to the north. It's particularly lovely on a clear morning when the light catches the valley bottom. The descent is much kinder on the legs, and you can easily make this part of a longer walk if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Otley. Rudding Holiday Park is well-positioned for this sort of day out, giving you a decent base without the tourist crowds of Harrogate. Pack a flask and some sandwiches - there's nowhere to buy refreshments on the hill itself, and the wind can be sharp even on mild days.
