Wescoe Hill

Proper walking boots are essential for this one - Wescoe Hill isn't particularly high, but the moorland terrain can get boggy after rain. Rising above the Wharfe Valley just south of Otley, this modest peak rewards those who make the effort with sweeping views across the Yorkshire Dales.

From the summit you can spot the distinctive outline of Almscliff Crag to the east and on a clear day, the Pennines stretch out to the west. It's not a mountain by any stretch, but there's something satisfying about standing on your own slice of Yorkshire moorland.

The walk up takes about 45 minutes from the nearest parking spot, following rough tracks through heather and bracken. Families with older children will manage fine, though the youngest might find it hard going. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space to let them off the lead once you're away from the sheep.

Expect to have the place largely to yourself, even on weekends. This isn't Pen-y-ghent or Ingleborough - it's more of a local's secret that gets overlooked by most visitors heading for the bigger fells further north. Worth combining with a pint in Otley afterwards, where you can properly appreciate just how much ground you covered from up there.
