Hartsholme Country Park

The lake at Hartsholme pulls you in straight away - proper expanse of water fringed by woodland, just a few minutes' walk from Lincoln's cathedral spires. This is a working nature reserve, not some manicured park, which means you'll spot kingfishers if you're lucky and patient, though the ducks and geese are guaranteed year-round.

You can walk the perimeter in a leisurely hour, or potter about the visitor areas longer. The paths are well-maintained and mostly flat, so it suits families with younger kids and older walkers fine. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - the hide near the main lake is your best bet for spotting something interesting. Summer brings dragonflies thick as confetti; winter is quieter but you'll have the place almost to yourself.

Free to roam and no faffing about with opening hours, which is refreshing. Allow an hour minimum, two if you're serious about the wildlife. The campsite is right there on the perimeter, so you can roll out of your tent and straight onto the paths - brilliant for a lazy weekend away. If you're based at Hartsholme's own site or any of the nearby options like Lakeside or South Cliff, this is your morning walk sorted without any drive.

Lincoln itself is ten minutes away for lunch or a museum fix. Hartsholme works best as the outdoor leg of a trip combining the city's architecture with some proper green space. Don't expect manicured gardens or activities - this is genuine habitat, which is exactly why it's worth your time.
