A warehouse full of old buses and lorries just outside Lincoln might sound dull, but spend an hour here and you'll actually get it. The Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum is exactly what it says on the tin - a collection of vintage vehicles that tells the story of how people and goods moved around this part of England from the 1920s onwards.

You're looking at restored coaches, delivery trucks, and passenger buses in various states of gleam. Some are pristine; others look like they've just rolled in from a farm sale. There's something oddly compelling about peering into a 1950s coach and imagining the trips it made, the conversations that happened in those seats. Kids will spend longer than you'd expect examining the cabs and trying to figure out the dashboards.

The museum works best if you're already passing through Lincoln or staying nearby - it's the kind of place you'd pair with a proper walk around the cathedral or a visit to Hartsholme Country Park, just a mile away if you're camping. Allow a couple of hours maximum; it's intimate rather than sprawling.

It's run by enthusiasts rather than a major heritage organisation, which means it has character but also variable opening hours and admission policies. Ring ahead before you visit, as opening times aren't always predictable. Free or paid entry - that'll depend on the day you call. Not essential, but if transport history speaks to you, or you've got a child obsessed with vehicles, it's worth the detour from Lincoln.
