Heath Wood

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more authentic than this slice of old England just outside Warwick. Heath Wood stretches across rolling Warwickshire countryside, its mix of oak, ash and birch creating proper dappled light that photographers love and dog walkers treasure. The paths here aren't manicured - expect muddy boots after rain and the odd fallen branch to navigate around.

Families will find plenty of space for kids to burn off energy, though parents should keep an eye on the younger ones as some paths can be steep and the wood lacks clear waymarking. Serious walkers might find it a bit tame, but it's lovely for a gentle morning stroll before hitting nearby Warwick Castle.

Being so close to Warwick means you'll rarely have the place entirely to yourself, especially at weekends. Early morning visits reward you with birdsong and the best chance of spotting deer picking their way through the undergrowth. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you venture - there are several informal trails weaving through the canopy.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Newlands or Twitey's Camping, Heath Wood makes a proper antidote to busy tourist attractions. Just don't expect facilities - bring water and wear decent walking boots.
