High Edge

The walk up to High Edge isn't long, but it's steep enough to get your heart going. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes from the car park near Buxton, and the payoff is a proper moorland viewpoint that catches you off guard with its scope. On a clear day you can see across the Peak District for miles - the kind of view that makes you understand why people spend their whole lives in this corner of Staffordshire.

It's a straightforward fell walk, the sort where you need decent boots but nothing fancy. The path can get boggy after rain, so timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon light hits the moorland beautifully, and there's rarely a queue. Families with older kids will manage it without complaint - under-tens might find the ascent a drag, though the wild, open landscape once you're up there tends to capture even bored teenagers.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow a couple of hours if you want to sit about and take in the views rather than just bag it and leave. The High Edge summit itself is marked, but honestly the whole upper plateau is worth wandering.

If you're based at Peak Glamping Hideaway or Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, this is an easy morning out before heading to bigger attractions. It won't keep you occupied all day, but it's the sort of walk that clears your head properly - just you, the wind, and views that stretch for ever. Well worth the leg work.
