High Wheeldon

Standing 386 metres above the Dove Valley, this limestone peak delivers proper White Peak views without the crowds you'll find on Kinder Scout or Bleaklow. The walk up from Earl Sterndale takes about 45 minutes through rough pasture - nothing too taxing, though the final scramble over loose rock requires a bit of care.

From the cairn-marked summit, you'll see across to Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill, two of the Peak District's most distinctive rocky outcrops. On clear days, the view stretches south towards the Staffordshire moorlands and north to the main Pennine ridge. Walkers will love the sense of space up here, while families with older children should manage the ascent without too much drama.

The hill sits just outside Newtown, making it a cracking day out if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Longnor Wood Holiday Park or Peak Glamping Hideaway. Unlike some Peak District summits, you won't need special kit or mountain experience - just decent boots and common sense. Allow half a day for the round trip, including time to admire those views and perhaps explore the old lead mining remains scattered around the lower slopes.
