Parkhouse Hill

Conical and utterly distinctive, this limestone peak rises like a perfect pyramid from the White Peak landscape near Newtown. The 371-metre summit offers some of the finest panoramic views in the southern Peak District, taking in everything from Chrome Hill to the rolling farmland beyond.

Getting to the top requires a decent scramble up steep grassy slopes - it's not technically challenging, but you'll feel it in your legs. The reward is worth every step though. On a clear day, the 360-degree vista stretches for miles, making it a proper favourite with photographers and walkers who appreciate dramatic viewpoints.

Families with young children might find the ascent a bit much, but teenagers and adults will relish the challenge. Allow about two hours for the round trip from the nearest parking spots along the country lanes. Early morning visits often provide the best light and fewer crowds.
