About Howgarth Wood
This is walker territory, genuinely. If you've got kids they'll enjoy spotting trees and splashing in the beck if there's been rain, but it's not a destination playground - bring them along on a family walk and they'll be fine, bored after an hour. For serious forest types who want a decent leg-stretch without the Lake District crowds, it's worth knowing about.
There's no visitor centre nonsense here that I can find, and that's rather the point. Free access, open whenever you fancy it. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on which routes you take and how often you stop staring at lichen. The woodland's at its best in spring when the bluebells come through, or autumn when the canopy changes. Summer can feel a bit dense.
If you're staying at Maustin Park down the road, this is a natural fit for a morning out - close enough not to burn half your day driving, far enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. Otley itself has proper cafes and shops for afterwards, which matters because you'll want a drink after this.
