Howlands Marsh

Salt air and sticky mud greet you at this working marsh just outside Clacton-on-Sea. Howlands Marsh sprawls across the Essex coastline, offering proper wetland walking where the land meets the North Sea. You'll find yourself squelching along raised paths through reed beds and tidal pools, with curlews calling overhead and the distant sound of waves breaking against the sea wall.

Birdwatchers absolutely love this spot. The mix of saltwater and freshwater habitats draws everything from little egrets to marsh harriers, particularly during migration seasons. Spring and autumn are cracking times to visit when the place comes alive with returning species. Bring binoculars and waterproof boots - the paths can get properly muddy after rain.

Families with young children might find the terrain challenging, and there's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation boards. This is more for serious nature lovers than casual day-trippers. Allow at least two hours if you want to explore properly and spot some wildlife.

Staying at nearby Oaklands Holiday Park or Haven Orchards Holiday Village puts you within easy walking distance of the reserve. It makes a lovely change from the bucket-and-spade beaches of Clacton, though kids who've had enough of muddy walks can always head to the town's pier and amusements afterwards.
