Martins Farm Country Park

A working farm turned nature reserve just outside Clacton-on-Sea, Martins Farm Country Park sits on the edge of Essex's quieter coastline. It's low-key stuff - the sort of place where you'll spot Essex wildlife properly if you time it right, rather than somewhere dripping with visitor facilities or hand-holding interpretation boards.

The reserve centres on traditional farmland habitat, so expect open grassland, hedgerows, and the occasional pond. Bird watchers get the most from it, especially in spring and autumn when migrants pass through. You might clock warblers, thrushes, and various raptors depending on the season. It's the kind of spot where patience pays - nothing happens quickly, which is precisely why it works.

Walking the boundary tracks takes an hour or so, less if you're just poking about for half that time. There's no charge that I'm aware of, and facilities are minimal - bring water and proper boots if it's been wet. Avoid peak weekends if you want any sense of solitude.

For a caravan holiday based at Oaklands Holiday Park or one of the other sites clustered nearby - Lee Wick Farm Cottages is proper close - this is your escape valve. It's not a day-out destination; it's what you do between coastal walks and fish and chips in Clacton. Families with young kids will find it dull unless they're already into spotting things. Serious naturalists and photographers will rate it. Everyone else can skip it without missing much.
