Hurst Hill

The walk up Hurst Hill rewards you with proper panoramic views across Teesdale and beyond - the sort of vantage point that makes you understand why people bother hiking in the Pennines. It's a modest peak by any measure, but what it lacks in altitude it makes up for in accessibility and those sweeping sightlines across Durham's rolling landscape.

Getting there from Barnard Castle takes roughly twenty minutes by car, which puts it within easy reach if you're based at one of the local campsites. The ascent itself isn't taxing - more of a brisk walk than a proper fell climb - so it works well for families who want something more active than a casual stroll but aren't keen on a full day's hiking. Expect to spend an hour on the hill itself, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly or stopping for photos.

The best light hits the view mid-morning or late afternoon, depending on the season. Spring and autumn tend to be clearest, though even in summer the visibility is usually decent unless you've caught the tail end of rain. Winter can be muddy underfoot, so decent boots matter.
