Ingleborough Camp

The walk up Ingleborough itself is the thing - a proper fell hike with serious views across the Yorkshire Dales. What makes it archaeological gold is the Iron Age fort that crowns the summit, though honestly, once you're up there catching your breath, the earthworks are subtle. You're looking at defensive banks and ditches from around 2,000 years ago, remains of structures that housed Celtic communities. It's not dramatic stonework like you'd find at a Roman site. The real reward is the landscape context - standing where those ancient settlers stood, understanding why they chose this specific 2,373-foot vantage point.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. It's not a casual stroll. Allow at least four hours for the round trip from the car park at Fell Lane, though the final push is steep and rocky. Bring proper boots. The fort itself won't detain you for more than twenty minutes unless you're seriously into Iron Age settlement patterns, but the fell walk is what you came for anyway.

It's free, obviously - it's a hillside. The best time is autumn when the light's crisp and you can actually see across to Morecambe Bay. Summer brings crowds to the path. Carnforth's your nearest proper town for supplies before heading out.

This works brilliantly as part of a wider Dales exploration from any of the nearby campsites like The Dalesbridge or Orcaber Farm. Combine it with walks around Ribblesdale and you've got a proper week's itinerary. Don't come expecting a visitor centre or interpretation boards. Come for the fell walk and treat the archaeology as context, not spectacle.
