Lord's Seat

The walk up Lord's Seat rewards you with proper views across the Lune Valley - on a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District fells. It's a modest peak by most standards, but don't let that fool you. The climb from Carnforth takes about an hour and a half depending on your pace, and it's genuinely steep in places, particularly towards the top where the path narrows through bracken.

What makes it work is the relative quiet. You won't find crowds here, which means the summit feels genuinely peaceful when you arrive. The trig point marks the high point, and there's enough space to sit and eat a sandwich without being jostled by dozens of other walkers. Families with older kids (say, eight and up) will manage fine if they're used to hills; younger ones might find the steepness tedious.

The best approach is from the Carnforth side rather than looping in from elsewhere - it's the more direct route. Go on a day with decent visibility; fog rolls in quickly at this height and kills the whole experience. Allow three hours return including a proper rest at the top.

For a park-based holiday, this sits well with the camping and glamping options clustered nearby - Howgill Lodge and Philpin Farm are practically on your doorstep. It's the sort of walk that justifies a morning out before heading back to base for lunch. Worth the effort if you're already in the area, but don't rearrange your whole trip around it.
