You'll need to do a bit of homework before heading to Sunset Hole near Carnforth - it's not the sort of place with a visitor centre or opening times posted online. This is a proper cave system tucked into the Yorkshire limestone, and it's the kind of spot that rewards the adventurous but demands respect.

The cave itself opens into the hillside with a dramatic entrance that lives up to its name when you catch the light at the right time of day. Inside, you're looking at passages and chambers carved by water over millennia - the geology alone is worth the visit if you're into that sort of thing. It's cold, damp, and genuinely atmospheric. Most people allow an hour or so to poke around, though serious cavers could spend longer exploring the deeper reaches.

This is emphatically not a family trip if your kids are small or claustrophobic. Walkers, geology enthusiasts, and anyone comfortable in confined spaces will get far more from it. Check conditions before you go - wet weather makes it slippery and less pleasant.

The wider area around Carnforth has plenty of decent countryside, so you can easily tack this onto a broader Yorkshire holiday.
