Little Ingleborough

The walk up Little Ingleborough is deceptive. From Carnforth it looks like nothing much - a modest limestone bump on the horizon - but get close and you realise why it commands respect. It's a proper fell, steep enough to make you work for it, with a summit that rewards the effort in ways a roadside viewpoint never could.

You're looking at roughly an hour and a half up, depending on fitness and which route you take. The paths are well-trodden but occasionally loose underfoot, especially after rain. The limestone pavements and exposed rock make it feel more dramatic than the height suggests. From the top, the views spread properly across the Lune Valley towards the Lake District fells - on a clear day it's excellent.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. It's not a trudge, and it's not a scramble - just a solid, honest hill walk that fits well into a day's exploration of the area. Families with older kids (8 plus, honestly) will manage it, though younger ones might find the steep sections tedious coming back down. This isn't a casual stroll.

Base yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Philpin Farm is closest, with Orcaber Farm and The Dalesbridge also within striking distance. Pair it with Ingleborough itself (the proper mountain, three miles away) and you've got a cracking couple of days' walking. Allow a full morning or afternoon for Little Ingleborough alone. Free to access, obviously - just park sensibly near the hamlet and walk in.
