Jingling Pot

The walk down to Jingling Pot is half the appeal. You descend into a limestone gorge near Carnforth where the beck tumbles over rocks and the walls press in properly close - it's genuinely atmospheric. The cave entrance yawns open, dark and inviting, with water flowing through the passage that gives the place its name.

This is a proper caving experience for the adventurous. You'll be wading through underground streams, ducking under low rock formations, and navigating by torch light. It's not a grand cathedral cavern or a tourist cave with electric lights and handrails. Instead, it's raw and intimate, the kind of place that makes you feel like an actual explorer rather than a visitor ticking off a checklist.

Bring wellies or proper caving boots - trainers won't cut it. The water's cold year-round and the passage can be slippery. Families with older kids who don't mind getting wet and muddy will have a memorable time here. Younger children or anyone claustrophobic might find it claustrophobic (quite literally). Allow at least two hours including the walk down and back up.

It's free to visit, which is brilliant value for what amounts to a genuine outdoor adventure. Nearby Philpin Farm Campsite and Primrose Glamping Pods both sit within a few miles, making this a proper addition to a caving and limestone walking holiday in the area. Time your visit for drier weather - flooding can close access.
