Kilters Hounds

The granite outcrops at Kilters Hounds rise unexpectedly from the Cornish countryside just outside Truro, creating one of those landscape features that makes you suddenly understand why people have lived here for centuries. It's a proper rocky landmark - the kind of place where the views across the mining heritage landscape become clear in a way they don't from the valleys below.

Walkers get the most from stopping here. The rocks themselves aren't a major climbing destination, but they're worth a detour if you're exploring the country lanes between Truro and the coast. The views sweep across the old mining terrain - those distinctive engine houses and spoil heaps that dot this part of Cornwall. On a clear day you can see quite far. The walk up takes maybe twenty minutes depending on where you park, and there's something satisfying about reaching the top.

It's free to visit and there's no formal opening hours - just turn up. An hour maximum is realistic unless you're properly settling in with a picnic. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a scramble; older ones who don't mind rocks and rough terrain will probably enjoy it.

Staying at Carnon Downs or Trevarth puts you minutes away. Both camps make good bases for exploring this part of mid-Cornwall without pushing all the way to the coast. It's the sort of stop that breaks up a longer holiday nicely - not a destination in itself, but proper worth the short drive if you're passing through.
