Plen an Gwary

A Bronze Age settlement hidden in the Cornish countryside just outside Truro, Plen an Gwary is exactly the sort of place that makes you feel like you've stumbled onto something proper special. What you're looking at are the remains of a prehistoric village - stone foundations, circular hut circles, and field systems that date back thousands of years. It's not dramatic or flashy. It's the kind of spot where you can piece together how people actually lived in the Bronze Age - where they built their homes, how they organised their land, what mattered to them. Families with older kids who aren't bored by "just rocks" will find it engaging, though younger children might need persuading that a few grass-covered bumps are worth the trip.

The site is free and open access, which means you can visit whenever suits you. Allow an hour to properly wander round and take it in. It works brilliantly if you're based at Carnon Downs Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, barely a mile away, or any of the other parks in the area - Trethem Mill and Trevarth Holiday Park are both within five miles. Combine it with a proper walk across the Cornish landscape and you've got yourself a genuinely rewarding afternoon. No crowds, no nonsense. Just archaeology doing what it does best.
