Just north of Carlisle lies a working industrial site transformed into something genuinely worth your time - Kingmoor North Nature Reserve sits on what used to be treated sewage beds. Sounds grim, but stay with me. The reserve has become a proper haven for birds and the wetland plants that thrive here, making it one of the better spots in the area if you're keen on watching waders, wildfowl and the occasional rarity that gets birders excited.

The walking is straightforward rather than challenging - you're on flat ground with clear paths, which suits families with children and anyone not looking for a serious hike. Bring binoculars. The real appeal is in the wildlife itself: in winter you'll see thousands of migrating birds, while spring and summer bring breeding populations and the chance to spot things like spotted crakes if you're lucky and patient. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice, maybe less if you're just passing through.
