Kinnaird Head Castle Lighthouse and Museum

The lighthouse stands on the clifftop at Fraserburgh like something out of a Victorian postcard, though what catches you first is how the castle fortifications grip the headland itself. You're looking at three centuries of Scottish coastal history stacked on top of each other - a 16th-century castle keep, a 17th-century addition, and then the lighthouse tower added in 1787 when someone had the sensible idea of warning ships away from the rocks below.

Inside, the museum feels authentic rather than polished. You climb the tower stairs - genuinely narrow, genuinely steep - and the view from the top justifies every step. The beam mechanism is still there, and there's enough detail about how the lighthouse actually functioned to hold your attention without drowning you in maritime jargon.

Histor buffs will spend a proper couple of hours here. Kids will manage about 45 minutes before the novelty of the climb wears off, though they'll remember the view. The castle rooms themselves are modest, so don't expect grand halls. What you get is a sense of how people actually lived and worked in these spaces.

Freserburgh itself is a working fishing town, unpretentious and real. If you're staying at Down On The Farm just a few miles south, this makes a solid morning or early afternoon excursion. It's the sort of place that rewards a visit without demanding half your day. The clifftop walk after is good too if the weather holds.
