Kite's Nest

Deep woodland near Ledbury, Kite's Nest is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a proper forest walk - the kind where you lose phone signal and actually notice the trees. The canopy closes in quickly, and if you time it right in spring or autumn, the light does something special through the branches.

There's not much in the way of facilities or marked attractions, which is rather the point. Walkers get the most from this one. You can spend an hour pottering about, following whatever paths appeal, or make a longer afternoon of it if you've got decent boots and aren't fussed about a destination. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after 40 minutes - there's no playground, no viewpoint to aim for, just woodland. But children who like building camps and hunting for wildlife will be occupied for ages.

It's free, which is refreshing. No entry fees, no visitor centre, no gift shop. Just go. Early morning or late afternoon in good weather is when it feels most worthwhile - the place has a different mood then.

If you're based at Hereford Camping and Caravanning Club Site or The Millpond, both just over four miles away, Kite's Nest makes a solid morning or evening excursion to stretch your legs without driving far. It's the sort of spot you'd combine with a town visit to Ledbury rather than make a special trip, but it's genuinely pleasant forest walking if woodland's your thing.
